Discovering Budapest: An Unforgettable Journey

We visited Budapest around October time and it was a dream come true. As a couple, it was one of our first vacations abroad together, and it truly exceeded all our expectations. From the moment we arrived, staying at the luxurious Mystery Hotel was the highlight of our trip. This elegant retreat became our home base, and it set the perfect tone for our adventure. With its stunning artwork, grand chandeliers, and impeccable service, the hotel felt like a splash of sophistication. Each morning, we enjoyed a delicious buffet breakfast, and the hotel’s spa was the ideal place to unwind after our busy days exploring the city.

1. City Park: A Serene Escape

One of our favourite outings was to City Park. This tranquil oasis, not far from the bustling city centre, offered a peaceful retreat with its beautiful stone buildings and lush green spaces. We had a bit of serendipity when we saw a hot air balloon floating gracefully across the sky, adding a magical touch to the already picturesque setting. Wandering through the park’s grounds and capturing the stunning views made for some great photos. We could easily have spent the whole day here, If our trip had of been longer I think we would have re visited this spot.

2. Buda Castle: A Step Back in Time

Our exploration of Buda Castle was absolutely unforgettable. Perched on Castle Hill, the castle provides breath taking views of Budapest and the Danube River. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, and wandering through its expansive grounds, exploring the Hungarian National Gallery, and visiting the Budapest History Museum gave us a deep dive into Hungary’s rich history. We spent hours soaking in the panoramic vistas, and the golden light of early morning or late afternoon made for perfect photo opportunities.

3. Thermal Baths: Relaxation Redefined

No trip to Budapest would be complete without experiencing its famous thermal baths. While Széchenyi and Gellért Baths are well-known, we opted for a more local, quieter bath for a serene experience. Spending a relaxing afternoon soaking in the warm waters and enjoying a bit of pampering was the perfect way to unwind. We loved capturing the intricate architectural details and the mystical steam rising from the hot water.

4. Parliament Buildings: A Gothic Masterpiece

The Hungarian Parliament Building is a must-see. Its neo-Gothic architecture is iconic and stunning. We took a guided tour, which allowed us to marvel at the grand halls and learn about Hungary’s political history. The building, especially when lit up at night, is a photographer’s dream. For the best shots, head to the Buda side of the Danube at sunset; the reflections in the water and the illuminated façade made for some incredible photos.

5. St. Stephen’s Basilica: A Panoramic Perspective

St. Stephen’s Basilica was another highlight. The basilica’s ornate interior as well as exterior is stunning. Now I’m not one for heights but I hear climbing to the top of the dome allows for some of the most stunning views of Budapest. We spent time capturing the beautiful views outside with a coffee in hand.

6. Margaret Island: A Peaceful Retreat

Margaret Island was the perfect spot for a relaxing day outdoors. You are able to rent bikes and explored the island’s beautiful gardens, medieval ruins, and they even have a small zoo. The rose garden and the musical fountain, especially at dusk, offered vibrant backdrops for photos and a serene escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.

Bonus Experiences: Culinary and Transport Delights

Our food adventures were fantastic. We indulged in some great Indian food and delicious noodles, discovering that these types of cuisine are becoming increasingly popular in Budapest. For dessert, we couldn’t resist trying chimney cakes. They come in a variety of flavours, including ones with ice cream in the middle, but we found the classic version on its own to be the best.

Getting around Budapest was easy with its efficient trams and buses. We enjoyed hopping on and off public transport and finding charming little shops for quick snacks or souvenirs.

Final Thoughts

Budapest is a city that blends history, relaxation, and modern charm beautifully. From the luxury of the Mystery Hotel to the captivating experiences around the city, every moment of our trip was magical. Whether we were exploring grand castles, soaking in thermal baths, or enjoying tranquil parks, Budapest truly captured our hearts.
