Top 4 Must-Visit Spots in North Wales: From Castles to Coastlines
Our recent family escape to North Wales was nothing short of magical. With Sychant Pass House as our luxurious base, we explored some of the region’s most enchanting spots. Here are the top four highlights from our trip, along with reasons I think you should visit and tips to make the most of your experience.
1. Conwy
Why You Should Visit: Conwy is a must-see for history lovers and families. Home to Conwy castle, an iconic medieval fortress offers breath taking panoramic views and a fascinating glimpse into the region’s past. The well-preserved towers and walls make it a captivating site for all ages. Conwy is also home to the smallest house in the UK, also known as the Quay house and recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records.
What We Did: After exploring the castle grounds taking in the views from the walls, we ventured into Conwy shopping strip and found an array of charming boutiques and cafes. We happened upon a frozen yoghurt shop nearby which was perfect given the warm weather and we can safely vouch for both the vanilla and strawberry frozen yoghurt. We enjoyed our treats during a scenic coastal walk less than two minutes away from the shop and spent time watching boats drift by and families crabbing along the water’s edge.
Helpful Tip: Parking can get busy, especially during peak season, so arrive early to secure a spot. ( if you can’t find a spot in the main car parks, the train station car park and the Quay car park are both a good option to check.
2. Betws-y-Coed
Why You Should Visit: Betws-y-Coed perfectly captures the charm and beauty of North Wales. With its quaint architecture, lush landscapes, and the soothing sound of the river, it’s ideal for a relaxed day out.
What We Did: We spent a perfect day soaking up the village’s charm, indulging in some of the best fish and chips we’ve ever had( Don’t tell our local that though ). As we wandered along the riverbank, we spotted a heron and even saw a few adventurous souls wild swimming in the river.
Helpful Tip: Visit on a weekday where possible to avoid weekend crowds. Parking fills up quickly, so plan to arrive early. After exploring, make sure to try the local fish and chips by the river – it’s a meal you won’t forget!
3. Portmeirion
Why You Should Visit: Portmeirion feels like stepping into another world with its whimsical, Italian-inspired architecture and vibrant colours. This unique village offers endless photo opportunities and a charming atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the UK.
What We Did: We arrived early to beat the crowds and wandered through the colourful streets, sipping iced lattes. A leisurely stroll along the coastal walk added to the day’s magic, offering serene views and perfect backdrops for memorable photos. We really did feel like we could have been abroad on this coastline it was stunning.
Helpful Tip: Book online to save time on entry. Parking is well-organized, but it can fill up quickly, so getting there at opening time is advisable.
4. Bodnant Garden
Why You Should Visit: Bodnant Garden is a botanical paradise that will captivate anyone with an appreciation for nature. Known for its stunning rhododendrons and vibrant blooms, it’s a tranquil retreat from daily life.
What We Did: We spent the day exploring every nook and cranny of this botanical wonderland. We even brought home a few plants to keep a bit of Bodnant’s magic with us, enjoying a coffee as we wandered through the lush greenery.
Helpful Tip: Bodnant Garden is especially beautiful in late spring and early summer when the rhododendrons are in full bloom. Parking is ample and free for visitors. Be sure to stop by the garden centre and cafe’s before you leave.
